Aikido is one of the most practical of all of the Japanese martial arts, developed in the 1900's by it's founder Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969) known to all as O'Sensei (venerable teacher).

Ai - Ki - Do meaning co-ordination of "mind - body - spirit". It has often been said by many aikidoists and fellow martial artists that aikido is the most difficult of all the martial arts to learn, yet once a student learns to relax both mind and body in coordination during practice they can progress quite quickly.

O'Sensei had devoted his whole life to the study of the martial arts, Daito Ryu founded by Sokaku Takeda (1859 - 1943) was to have perhaps the most profound influence on his development of Aikido. It was not until 1942 that O'Sensei formally designated his study and teachings of "The Way of Harmony" and the name Aikido was born.

On the death of O'Sensei in 1969 he was succeeded by his son Kisshomaru who became the Aikido Doshu, On the death of Kisshomaru he was succeeded by his son Moriteru Ueshiba who is the present Doshu.
